“Cool roof” finishes for roofs: an economical and energy-efficient solution

The concept of a ‘cool roof’ has become essential in modern construction, standing out for its ability to improve the energy efficiency and thermal comfort of buildings. A ‘cool roof’ is capable of reflecting most of the energy from the sun, rather than allowing it to penetrate the interior of the building. Its advantages include:

  • Reduction in indoor temperature: Polyurea cool roof systems reflect a large proportion of solar radiation, thereby minimising heat absorption into the building. This can reduce indoor temperatures by several degrees, reducing the need for air conditioning and contributing to a more comfortable environment.
  • Energy savings: By reflecting heat, the use of air-conditioning and heating systems is reduced, leading to lower energy consumption. This is particularly beneficial in hot climates or in industrial buildings with large roof areas.

The efficiency of a ‘cool roof’ can be measured using the SRI (Solar Reflectance Index). The protective finish of COLODUR in white has an SRI value of 105, one of the highest on the market. Similarly, the aliphatic resin in IMPERMAX A, with an SRI of 100, also offers excellent performance as a ‘cool roof’ solution.

In short, IMPERMAX A or white-pigmented COLODUR coatings, which offer high resistance to chemicals, outdoor conditions and UV radiation, help to reduce the surface temperature of the treated surface, thereby increasing its durability. They also help to drastically reduce air-conditioning costs during the hot summer months. And, ultimately, they help to mitigate the well-known ‘urban heat island’ effect.

Furthermore, if photovoltaic panels are installed on a roof treated in this way, clean energy production is significantly increased, as the panels will operate at a lower temperature.
